Frequently asked questions

Honest answers before your first session

It's normal to have questions before booking. Here are the ones people ask most, grouped so you can jump to what's relevant to you.

About ReCentre

What is ReCentre Physio?

ReCentre Physio is an integrative, nervous-system-informed physiotherapy practice run by Emily Jones, an AHPRA-registered physiotherapist. Sessions blend physiotherapy — movement, posture, breath — with nervous system regulation and counselling-informed support, delivered by telehealth across Australia.

What kinds of things do you help with?

Chronic pain and tension that doesn't fully resolve, burnout and carer fatigue, anxiety and nervous system overwhelm, big life transitions, and the physical symptoms that often come with all of these — see the Who I Work With page for the full picture. You don't need a diagnosis or a specific label to reach out.

What conditions do you work with?

My focus is on nervous-system-related presentations and the physical symptoms that come with them — chronic pain, tension, fatigue and stress-related experiences that don't always show up clearly on a scan. I have a particular interest in complex, overlapping presentations including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), POTS, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility, alongside anxiety, burnout and trauma. You don't need a diagnosis in any of these categories to book — a sense that something isn't right is enough.

What are invisible illnesses?

Invisible illnesses are health conditions that aren't outwardly obvious to other people — there's often no visible injury, nothing that signals "something is wrong" at a glance. That doesn't make them any less real or less disruptive. Conditions like chronic pain, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, POTS and EDS often fall into this category, and the lack of visible signs can mean people are met with disbelief or told their symptoms are exaggerated — something I take seriously, and never assume about anyone who comes to see me.

Will I see a doctor or specialist at ReCentre Physio?

No — Emily is a physiotherapist, not a medical doctor, and doesn't prescribe medication. She works alongside your GP or specialists where relevant, rather than replacing them.

Is it right for me?

Can I still come if my issue doesn't feel nervous-system related — just a regular injury or pain?

Yes. The physiotherapy foundation applies to everyday injuries and pain too. If nervous system regulation isn't relevant to your situation, we simply won't spend time on it — the approach adapts to what's actually going on for you.

Can you help if I have several overlapping symptoms or diagnoses?

Yes — this is genuinely where a whole-picture view tends to help most. Rather than treating each symptom as its own separate problem, we look at your situation as a whole and build strategies that support your system overall.

I've been told my pain is "just stress" or "all in my head".

Pain is a real, complex experience shaped by biological, emotional and social factors together — never just one of those in isolation. Even where there isn't one clear physical cause, that doesn't make your pain imagined, and it doesn't mean nothing can be done. My approach looks at the whole picture — body, nervous system and life circumstances — so care is built around what's actually contributing for you.

What if I've already tried physio (or other things) and nothing has helped?

That's a genuinely common starting point, not a sign this won't work for you. Many clients arrive having tried several legitimate approaches without lasting change. This work often looks a bit different from what's been tried before — but I can't promise it will succeed where other things haven't. What I can offer is a genuinely individualised look at your situation, rather than repeating a generic protocol.

Do I have to talk about my past or trauma if I don't want to?

No. You're welcome to share as much or as little as feels right, and we can work well together without ever discussing your history in detail. The trauma-informed part of this work is about how care is delivered — with your comfort and consent at the centre — not a requirement to disclose anything.

Do I need a referral to book?

Not to book privately — you're welcome to book directly, any time. A referral only becomes relevant for some funding pathways, which we'll confirm with you. See the Services page for what's currently confirmed, or ask a question if you're not sure.

The approach

What is integrative, nervous-system-informed physiotherapy, and how is it different to usual physiotherapy?

It combines physiotherapy with a broader understanding of how your nervous system, body and life circumstances interact, rather than treating an isolated site of pain on its own. In practice: physiotherapy techniques where they're genuinely useful, nervous system regulation practices, honest conversation about what's going on for you, and a plan built collaboratively around your goals. See the How I Work page for the full picture.

What's your approach to chronic pain or a nervous system that feels constantly "on"?

Safety first. Sessions start by helping your body find enough safety to soften its guard, and generally move from body to thoughts and stories — a pacing approach that follows your capacity, not a fixed sequence your care is forced through. It's explained in full on the How I Work page.

What do you mean by "trauma-informed care"?

Trauma-informed care doesn't mean directly treating trauma as a psychologist would. It means recognising that past or ongoing trauma can shape how someone experiences pain, engages with treatment and relates to healthcare providers — and adjusting how care is delivered accordingly. In practice: your comfort and pace come first, you stay in the driver's seat, boundaries are respected, and everything is explained clearly so there are no surprises.

Your first appointment

Do all new clients start with an initial assessment?

Yes. The first session combines a physical assessment with your history — what tends to set you off, what helps you settle, and what you want to change. See the How I Work page for the full walkthrough.

What can I expect in my first session?

A proper conversation and guided assessment, followed by body-based work and plain-language explanation of what's going on — with something small and specific to practise before your next session.

What information should I bring to my assessment?

Any referrals, imaging results, medical records or previous test results you have on hand are genuinely helpful — but not essential. If you don't have copies, that's completely fine; we can follow up on anything relevant later. You may also be sent a short questionnaire before your appointment to help make the most of our time together.

Practical questions

Do you see clients in person, or only online?

ReCentre Physio is a telehealth practice — sessions are online, Australia-wide, year-round. There are no in-person clinic sessions, so you can do this work from wherever feels safest, without travel time.

What does a telehealth assessment actually involve, and does it work as well as in-person?

It covers detailed history-taking, guided symptom assessment, and functional movement assessment — posture, range of motion, how you move through everyday tasks — talked through and observed step by step with real-time feedback. Physiotherapy has always involved more than hands-on treatment: movement retraining, education and self-management strategies make up a large part of it, and research shows these active, education-led approaches tend to produce better long-term outcomes than passive treatment alone. One genuine advantage of telehealth is being seen in your own environment — often exactly where the patterns we're working with show up.

What do I need for a telehealth session?

A device with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a private space where you're comfortable moving and talking freely.

Is my telehealth session private and secure?

Sessions are planned to run through healthdirect Video Call, a platform purpose-built for Australian healthcare consultations, with a secure virtual waiting room — you wait privately until I'm ready to connect. Exact settings, links and privacy details will be confirmed with your appointment and documented before launch.

What are your session fees?

Session options and fees are being confirmed. Emily's material contains conflicting durations and prices, so the demo doesn't quote figures — a single confirmed fee table will appear on the Services page and booking surface before launch.

What funding or referral pathways do you accept?

Private clients are welcome to book directly with no referral. Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants are welcome — see below. Other funding pathways are being confirmed for telehealth delivery and will be listed once verified.

Do you accept NDIS-funded clients?

The practice isn't currently NDIA-registered, so self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants can be seen, but not agency-managed participants. If you're not sure which category your plan falls under, your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm this for you.

What's your cancellation policy?

Cancellation and rescheduling terms are being confirmed and will be stated clearly on the booking page before launch, so there are no surprises.

What if I have trouble joining my session?

Reach out by email as soon as you notice an issue and we'll sort it out — see the contact section on the home page.
